BitMeter is a bandwidth meter application for Windows. This application is ideal for metering the bandwidth usage of a single computer at all times. If your Internet provider limits your downloads (I am sorry for you), this is a must. BitMeter will show you a little square on the screen, which you can move wherever you like. That square will show you a graph of your upload and download speed. At the bottom, you will also see the speed in numbers. You might think that having the application floating around isn't practical. Well, you can select a new feature of the application, Click Through, that will let you make the program transparent. Really, it will be there, and if there is a link beneath it you can click it. Of course, the application will not be accessible anymore. To regain control you have to disable the feature from the tray icon, which also shows you the speed in a little icon. BitMeter is packed with nice features that allow you to keep a tight record of your Internet activity.

Has helped me track down many data leaks.
Also gives audio warning when there is heavy data usage - you set your own parameters.
It gives ongoing and immediate colour coded usage graphs plus digital readout,
Can be set to give audible warnings of high usage.
Also historical usage hourly, daily and monthly.
Now if someone can provide similar free tool for my WIFI router...
